Definition of ombudsman:
In nursing homes, assisted living homes, and other residences for those whose care cannot be done properly at home due to physical and mental weakness, there is an individual designated as "OMBUDSMAN" whose ONLY goal is to look into any complaints made by residents or families or any complaints which may come to the attention of the OMBUDSMAN independent of others. IF---the resident desires, the OMBUDSMAN can REPRESENT THE RESIDENT'S INTERESTS to the nursing facility. No tie of any kind to remuneration from any party is allowable-and will disqualify anyone from being enabled by the state to assume this position. The ombudsman has training which is certified by the state-and is expected to be fully aware of the responsibilities TO THE RESIDENT ONLY, and will work to resolve complaints with the facility. The ombudsman should have knowledge of other resources which can be useful to the resident. The RIGHTS OF NURSING HOME RESIDENTS are prescribed by law and, when enforced, are the backbone of decent respect and care.
